Workshop Description

In this year’s Law Workshop, learn about various laws that relate to your duties and responsibilities as school district employees by analyzing significant and recent court opinions and arbitration decisions involving Nevada school districts. Learn about the laws that were litigated, what the parties’ positions were, and, most importantly, why the courts ruled the way they did. Here are just some of the cases that will be included: CCASAPE v. CCSD – The administrators’ union sues CCSD for failing to adhere to the reorganization law. CCSD v. Smith – CCSD is sued for negligence for allowing a photograph showing a student’s genitals to be included in the yearbook. CCSD v. Bryan – CCSD is sued for failing to protect two sixth-grade students from harassment, including homophobic slurs. Washoe County School District v. Edlund – WCSD terminates an employee for bringing a weapon to school. Shea v. State – Nine parents of children who attend public school in Clark, Washoe, and White Pine counties sue the State of Nevada for inadequate funding. Nevada State Education Association v. Clark County Education Association – CCEA seeks a declaratory judgment that it has no obligation to transmit member dues to NSEA.

ALL are welcome, including anyone in a non-administrative position! NASA IS NOT A UNION.NASA is Nevada's PreK-12 Professional Development Organization for ALL Nevada Educators!

This workshop counts for .5 credit (7.5 hours) toward license renewal for ALL educators!

In CCSD, administrators and professional-technical administrators may count this workshop for license renewal OR hour accrual toward step-advancement - not both for administrators.

(maximum of 30 hours per year for administrators in this category)!

This workshop DOES NOT count for salary advancement hours for CCSD Non-Administrators (ONLY LICENSE RENEWAL HOURS); however, they are welcome to attend and WILL receive license renewal credit!

All participants earn license renewal credit by taking this event!

Washoe County participants may receive salary advancement- please look in MyPGS 1-2 weeks after NASA posts this offering to see if inservice credits are offered.

If so, Washoe County School District (WCSD) participants are required to register in MyPGS and submit an artifact (which will be specified) on how they will implement this professional learning to increase student achievement before a certificate is issued.
